facial-acupuncture-thumb20710739Acupuncture, which addresses in energy pathways called meridians, has been practiced for more than 3,000 years throughout Asia and its effects are also documented by western science. In addition to chiropractic care, we use this centuries-old healing art to balance systems in the body, not just specific conditions.

Some acupuncturists are not licensed and have obtained only 100 to 150 hours of education. In addition to being a chiropractor, Dr. Passov is a licensed acupuncturist with a master’s degree and more than 3,000 hours of education and clinical training in acupuncture and traditional Chinese herbal medicine.

What about the needles?

The most common question we get is about the needles we use. Most people have encountered hypodermic needles and sewing needles. Both types are gigantic compared to acupuncture needles, which are hair-thin and sterile. In fact, five acupuncture needles could easily fit inside a hypodermic needle.

You may feel a tiny prick when the needle is inserted, although it’s common to feel nothing at all. Most discomfort is created by the patient’s vivid imagination and not the needle itself.

How does acupuncture work?

No one knows for sure, although brain MRIs show acupuncture activates specific areas of the brain. However, thousands of years of use and clinical experience show it is highly effective. In Asia acupuncture is understood by its effects on meridians, which can be described as rivers of energy flowing through your body. These meridians can experience restrictions in this flow of energy at certain points. Acupuncture helps loosen the areas of stagnant energy so that it can circulate properly.

Acupuncture visits can take as little as 15 to 20 minutes, but sessions are usually 45 minutes.

Most people experience a variety of effects from acupuncture, which include deep relaxation, increased well-being, and a calm alertness.
