Fertility Therapy in Calabasas

A balanced menstrual cycle important for conceiving

calabasas-fertility-therapyA healthy menstrual cycle lasts 28 days (25-35 days is a good range), includes little to no PMS, and produces bright red blood with no clots.

Healthy cervical discharge is clear to white, not any other color. Discharge that begins about six days before ovulation indicates fertility and a rise in estrogen. A lack of this discharge may indicate a yin deficiency.

Ovulation is the release of the egg, which lives for six to 12 hours after release, while sperm lives for up to five days. The best time to have intercourse is four to five days prior to ovulation with two days prior being optimal.

Traditional Chinese Medicine says you are most deficient and vulnerable during menstruation, so take care to stay comfortable, not overdo it, and nourish yourself during this time.

Pre-conception dietary suggestions

Eat organic foods as much as possible and avoid meats that have been treated with hormones or fish that contains mercury. Make sure you get plenty of essential fatty acids (EFAs), particularly omega 3 fatty acids such as is found in wild salmon. Emphasize vegetables in your diet, such as broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, and dark green vegetables. Avoid alcohol and caffeine; some studies show caffeine impairs fertility.

In Chinese medicine the kidney system is very important for reproduction. Foods that nourish the kidney essence include chicken or duck eggs, seeds and nuts, oysters, seaweed, and algae.

Lifestyle tips to encourage conception

Sufficient sleep is vital, and it’s important to try and limit stress. Of course struggling to conceive can create stress, so it’s important to work in ways to relieve it, such as through meditation, yoga, socializing, and other calming activities. Exercise, but don’t overdo it.

Men should skip saunas, hot tubs, and tight clothes to avoid heating up sperm.

Using acupuncture for fertility

Acupuncture has a long history of supporting fertility by:

• Improving the uterine lining
• Increasing blood flow to the uterus
• Regulating hormones
• Reducing the stress associated with fertility problems
• Increasing sperm quality and motility in men
• Improving IVF success

I recommend you begin acupuncture at least three months prior to attempting to get pregnant and then continue it at least through the first trimester.
